Assessing Students

Assessments can take on many different forms. You can assess students through written tests, through asking questions, or through observations.There is importance in both formative and summativeassessments. Both forms not only assess students, but assess us as their educators.
Formative Asssessments:
  • Monitors student learning for the purpose of adjusting instructional strategies and activities
  • Specific criteria should be identified – What are you looking for?

Summative Assessments:
  • Monitors student learning to determine student achievement and to evaluate their reading and writing
  • Specific criteria should be identified – How will you know that the student has achieved the desired outcome? What are you looking for?

    • Norm – referenced tests
    • Portfolios
    • Projects
    • Open – ended student products
