The book I chose to do my book talk on is called Don’t Laugh at Me by Steve Seskin and Allen Shamblin. This book has a more serious tone to it, but it a great book none the less. The book is about people who may look different and don’t feel like they fit in, but they have the voice to say “Don’t laugh at me”. I actually saw this book used at Constable School during respect week. My cooperating teacher played the song for the students and used it to teach the students empathy. You could tell by the looks on the student’s faces that they understood the frustration, sadness, and pain the people in the story went through.
This book is perfect for teaching empathy because I am sure that everyone at some point has felt out of place or that they don’t fit in so they could easily empathize with what the children in the book are going through. It’s perfect for building community, acceptance and respect in the classroom. The pictures in the story portray the pain and sadness perfectly, so the students even if they can’t read the words can tell by the children’s expressions and body language how they are feeling. The book I bought also comes with a CD. That is how I first experienced it, and I thought it was so meaningful, so I decided to see if it was adopted from a book. This book is a perfect book for bully-prevention, which is really a huge focus now especially in elementary and middle schools.
